Recorded live at the Jazzlab Jazz Club (Melbourne) in 2019, this recording is a collaboration of 5 improvising musicians and Tok Norris who engineered and mastered the recording. (Students from RMIT were involved in this process). The collaboration was led by Robert Burke and Scottish saxophonist Raymond MacDonald who mapped out a live performance of mainly Raymond's compositions. The wonderful musicians that played on this album played a huge role in creating music that was such an enjoyable inclusive and creative experience.

What we did:
Each player that is included in this collaboration brings with them a high level of expertise in musical styles and on their instrument. They also bring improvisatory experience in generating ideas, making choices of when to play or not to play, copying ideas or develop ideas and the possibilities of taking a conciliatory or contradictory position in their improvisatory contribution. What also contributes to these choices are the music experiences of each performer. In 2021, Jordan Murray’s (PhD research) investigated an approach to the performance of collaborative free improvisation based on what he called ‘indices of style’. This recording is an example of a stylistic bricolage where each player brings a series of style signifiers that informs the collective improvisations that are performed ‘in the moment’.
